Battle Report: Circle (Kaya2) v.s. Skorne (Morghoul3)

Circle (Kaya2) v.s. Skorne (Morghoul3+ Escorts)

Hey everyone, time for the first battle report! I actually don't have pictures for this first one, so bear with me as I kinda have to go on memory here and describe things.

My list:

Kaya2
-Druid Wilder
-Laris
-Feral
-Stalker
-Ghetorix
-Wild Argus
Sentry Stone+ Mannikins
Shifting Stones+ Keeper
Full Nyss Hunters

I've since changed up this list a bit since this game, for example I wasn't too happy with the Wild Argus and just eventually got around to fixing my Gorax model and swapped it for that so Primal does not cost the Feral or Kaya2 fury. I mostly wanted the Wild Argus for a combat light and for Doppler Bark but I wasn't happy with how it worked out as you'll see below.

Basically I'm running beast heavy but I still wanted some stuff for SR2017 circle-zone presence so that why I brought along some infantry, and just went with taking Nyss over Druids, as their shooting and ability to fight is a bit better and I don't feel like the Druid's toolbox helps Kaya2 that much.

Here's what I played against:

War Room Army

Skorne - Morg3

Theme: No Theme Selected
74 / 75 Army

Armory - Steamroller Objective

Dominar Morghoul & Escorts - WB: +25
- Dominar Morghoul & Escorts (Cont.)
- Aptimus Marketh - PC: 5
- Titan Cannoneer - PC: 17 (Battlegroup Points Used: 17)
- Titan Cannoneer - PC: 17 (Battlegroup Points Used: 8)
- Cyclops Shaman - PC: 8

Extoller Soulward - PC: 3
Extoller Soulward - PC: 3

Nihilators - Leader & 9 Grunts: 15
Paingiver Beast Handlers - Leader & 3 Grunts: 5
Praetorian Ferox - Leader & 4 Grunts: 20
Tyrant Commander & Standard Bearer - Tyrant & Bearer: 6

Anyway on to what happened.

Steamroller 2017 CiD was used, we rolled Spread the Net, so basically there was a circle troop scoring zone in the middle, one flag was on my table edgejust south of the circle zone my my left hand side, the other flag was in the same place on his side, except it was to the right. And there was also a rectangle beast scoring zone on each our sides on different ends of the table near the circle zone.

The Terrain setup was for my table edge on the left side there was a medium sized hill just south of the flag on my side, in the middle of my side just south of the circle zone was a few wall cover obsctructions, but the right side of my table was open (leading up to my side's rectangle.)

His terrain was mostly the same except his hill was near his left-hand rectangle zone instead of his side's flag and his middle area of the table didn't have the low walls between it and the middle circle zone, however inside the circle zone was a forest that took up a decent part of the upper part of the zone and the forest was closer to his table edge's side of the middle circle zone.

Deployment:

I won the roll off and decided to go first.

For my Deployment I deployed the Nyss Hunters down the middle, planning to take them to and past the wall so they could make a move on the middle zone, while Kaya2, her BG and the Wilder deployed toward the left hand hill to go to get to the flag.

My opponent deployed Morghoul and his escort sort of spread out near the middle, with the Canoneer and the Ferox to his left closer to his left side rectangle north of my flag along with the Extoller and the Beast Handlers. While he deployed the Nihilators slightly to Morghoul's right so they could go for the middle zone, Marketh Deployed close to Morghoul's crew.

Advanced Deploys:

I had two of them.

I deployed The Shifting Stones and the stone keeper sort of to to the left of center so they could help the BG and possibly be an annoying contest piece for the mid zone. I deployed the Sentry Stone and Mannikins on the left flank towards my side's rectangle, looking to eventually wrap around the other side of the mid zone to look for sprays.

Circle Turn 1:

Sentry generated 3 fury during my Maintenance phase.

Nyss Hunters ran up to the wall.

Sentry Stones and Mannikins advanced up to the right rectangle a bit but turned themselves to start heading to the circle zone later. Sentry spends a fury to create a forest.

Stalker activates and Warps Prowl and forces to run, just past the hill just to the south of the flag, nestled in between the flag and the hill.

Ghetorix forces to run and end up a little to the right of the flag.

Feral Warps Speed and forces to run, ending upto the right of the flag but close tot he middle zone.

Laris forces to run and ran up to the north side of the hill.

Wild Argus forces to run and get on the hill also, a little south of Laris.

Kaya2 activates and advances up to in between the Feral, the flag, and the Stalker, Spends 3 fury to cast Shadow Pack, and then 2 more to cast Forced Evolution on the Stalker, holding onto 1 fury.

Shifting Stones and the Keeper shift up toward the middle zone.

Skorne Turn 1:

Nihilators run towards the middle zone, some make it into the woods while others sort of wrap around the right side of it.

Ferox run up toward the south edge of the rectangle zone.

Titan Canoneers and stuff advances and parks itself on the right-hand corner of the rectangle. it lobs a shot at one of the shifting stones, it's out of range but he hopes for a good drift, it drifts fairly close to one of his own Nihilators but doesn't quite catch him.

the Extoller and the Beast Handlers moves to the rectangle just to right of the canoneer near Morghoul's crew

Marketh moves up a little past Morghoul.

Morghoul and his crew activate. The Escorts sort of fan out near him as Morghoul casts Occultation on the Nihilators. Then casts Mirage on the Ferox.

Then he ends his turn I think.

Circle Turn 2:

Sentry Stone gets back up to 3 fury in the Maintenance Phase

I leech fury back up to 6. Kaya upkeeps Forced Evolution for 1.

My first thought was trying to do something about those Nihilators. Unfortunately Morghoul gave them Stealth so I had to move my Nyss up in the zone closer than I would like to be able to take any shots at the Nihilators at all. This does end up causing problems soon. Anyway I can't see any of the Nihilators in the woods, so I manage to shoot at the closest ones at the right side, killing one of them with a failed Tough roll, the other shot missed.

I shift my shifting stones into the zone as well, and my Stone Keeper was close enough to Rock Hammer one of the nihilators near the woods and catches 2 models with a hit. Howeven oonly one dies, the other damage rolls fails to damage.

My Sentry Stone and Mannikin's move up. my mannikins is just in range to spray 1 of the Nihilators tot he far right, I spend a Sentry Stone fury to boost to hit and connect, and it fails it's tough check.

As for my battle group I wasn't sure what to do. my beasts weren't in range to get to either the Skorne's backline at the rectangle this turn, nor could really do much to the Nihilators, and I knew if I just moved in that direction without making it in, Kaya would be wide open to being charged by the Ferox after they Apparition from Mirage. So what I ended up doing is defensively move around the flag. Ghetorix moves a bit closer to the Cavalry and the middle zone throwing up his Spiny Growth animus to sort of get ready for incoming shooting. the Stalker moves up and bit past the flag and riles for 1, the Feral adjusts a bit and Warps Protective Plates and it and the Stalker try to form a cage around the flag, the Feral riles for 1. Laris forces to run to the side of Ghetorix trying to get ready to arc soon. The Wild Argus forces to run up just behind. Kaya advances and moves B2B to the right of the flag. She recasts Shadow Pack for 3 fury, She spends her 2 last fury to cast Dogpile challing through Laris at the Ferox, but miss. The Wilder advances to keep up.

And that's my turn.

Skorne Turn 2:

In the Maintenance Phase the Ferox use their Apparition move to scoot a bit to the left, getting ready to flank around my beasts.

Morghoul leeches fury and lets his upkeeps drop.

The Titan Canoneers then lobs a shot at the Nyss after aiming. It boosts to hit and hits, and it easily kills a bunch of Nyss as well as Cylena unfortunately as he boosted damage on her.

Then the pain begins, Morghoul and his escorts moves up and Morghoul casts Night's Reflection on the Nyss, hitting them and blinding them.

Marketh activates and moves in range to spell-slave Night's Reflection which hits and blinds Ghetorix.

The Nihilators charge the Nyss. With their DEF lowered due to blind they are very easy to hit which starts a nearly endless Berzerk train. The Nyss are completely wiped out,and the Keeper and two stones also take Berzerk swings from a few Nihilators, The Keeper dies and so does one of the stones.

The Extoller Soulward moves up close enough to shoot Ghetorix with the Spirit Eye. With the blind it easily hits, and due to Annihilating Gaze it cripples Ghetorix's Spirit in one hit.

The Ferox Activate and Charge in to make their impact attacks, one hits the stalker, one hits Laris, Another hit the Argus, One hits Ghetorix, and the last one manages to get to Kaya. Ghetorix takes a decent hit to his mind but it's not out, That Ferox takes 1 point of Spiny Growth damage. Ferox 2's impact attack misses the Stalker, Laris is hit but only take a couple of points to his Spirit. Wild Argus is hit and loses it's body in one shot. Thankfully Kaya2 is missed thanks to DEF 16

Then it goes back to me. The flag is contested at this point so Skorne scores one CP from the rectangle zone, while I remain at zero. thankfully my remaining stones are still contesting the circle zone.

Circle Turn 3: (Feat Turn)

I roll for Wellspring and get back up to 3 fury on the Sentry Stone.

I leech fury back to full. I pay 1 to upkeep Forced Evolution.

Sentry Stone and Mannikins advance but don't quite make it intot he circle zone to contest. However, the Mannikins manage to spray some Nihilators. First Manikin catches only one, but gets him in the back arc and easily hits. however he ends up being Tough. second spray catches two, I boost to hit twice, missing the first one and hitting the second, and it fails the tough roll this time. Last spray catches another one, I boost one more time and it hits, but makes a Tough roll.

Okay so my priority with the battle group was. "Secure the flag, Protect Kaya, kill the Cavalry."

Laris activates first and forces to Spirit Shift to Kaya to get out of melee with the Ferox, Laris places near Kaya in such a way as to have channeling LoS to something...

I activate Kaya and feat. Kaya then attacks the Ferox that got to her and hits and kills it with a boosted damage roll. Kaya then casts Dogpile Through Laris on something i don't remeber.

Ghetorix activates, due to blind he can only either move or act, and since his spirit is crippled he can't force, so he just swings his axe at the Ferox but misses due to blind. second initial also misses. Ghetorix feat teleports back to kaya to the lower left of her near the Wilder.

The Wilder activates and moves over to Medicate Ghetorix, healing 2 damage and un-crippling his Spirit.

Stalker activates, Warps Strength and splatters the Ferox with a boosted swing and teleports to the north of Kaya.

The Wild Argus combostrikes a Ferox, don't remember if I killed it.

The Feral Warps Strength, and then forces to cast Primal on itself and runs in the splatter a Nihilator then teleports back.

Skorne Turn 3: (Feat Turn,)

The Titan Canoneers shoots and kills a shifting stone.

The Nihilators charge and kill the final shifting stone giving them control of the middle circle zone.

Marketh spell slaves to try to blind Kaya, it misses thankfully.

But it doesn't matter.

Morghoul feats and tries blinding Kaya again, Morghoul moves in to attack Kaya first swing hits and boosts  damage and crits and does 13 damage with Crit Decap. and then she died.

Skorne Assasination Victory.

Afterthoughtss/Discussion:

I just didn't have a plan. Turn 2 is what killed me, I was way too indesicive with my beasts and meandered too much, I should have maybe made an play like sent my Beasts into the Cavalry before they charged me, before they got to Apparition, maybe that would have put me in a better spot? But then again Morghoul could threaten Kaya still, I was too focused on the scenario, I didn't want to lose control of the flag or the middle zone but there was nothing I could really do about that.

If I hadn't gotten assasinated I think I might've scored on the flag but I was still behind.

Doesn't help me that I was tilted because of blind, especially when Ghetorix got blinded and had his Spirit knocked out in one shot, it just mentally destroyed me, I don't know what it is about blind that tilts me so much.

Maybe the takeaway from this is to take more risks early, maybe i'd have been in a better position had I put pressore on Morghoul by having my beasts just on his Cav or go mess up the Nihilators even if I had to feat earlier to do it, I dunno. I'm just not sure what I really did wrong and what my takeaway from this game should be. Other than I.... really hate blind.

Thanks for reading my silly half-remembered battle report, hopefully next time I'll have pictures so you guys can get a better idea!
